I recently shared about the amazing 4-H Wellness 360º program with the National 4-H Council and the importance of teaching teens life skills. Beyond their standard program that teaches kids how to become great leaders, they have launched a 30 Days of Doing campaign to encourage families to get out and be active while learning.
Kids are fast learners and they retain even more information when learning is hands-on. 30 Days of Doing is the official launch of 4-H’s year-long national campaign, “Inspire Kids to Do.” 30 Days of Doing celebrates ALL kids who “do” with purpose across the nation through fun tools, tips, resources and stories for moms and kids. This movement will bolster the path for 4-H to empower 10 million true leaders, youth who do with a purpose to navigate life challenges, pursue passions and contribute to the world around them, by 2025.
4-H Wellness 360º, supported by Target, provides the classes ranging from yoga to gardening and self-discovery to make sure today’s youth have the knowledge and confidence to not only live a healthy life themselves, but to also help share their knowledge with other kids and their families.
Our family loves to find ways to explore and learn during our travels and extracurricular activities.
During 30 Days of Doing, inspire kids to DO by engaging in hands-on, positive learning activities related to health, wellness and more.
Download 4-H’s “Inspire to Do” list to get started. The National 4-H Council provides you with a list of 30 ideas to get out and be active with your kids through interactive learning activities. I shared our list of five hands-on educational activities to do as a family that expands on the list of 30 ideas you’ll be able to download for free.
Be sure to enter the photo contest at 4-H.org/InspireKidstoDo on September 1 – 30. You could win a $10,000 scholarship for your kid.
5 Interactive Learning Activities for Families
Geocaching
Our family loves to go geocaching. We started when my son was a toddler and he got so excited to find little surprises along the path. Geocaching teaches directions, navigation, using a compass and exploring. Plus, you’ll get in some exercise during your walk.
Create a Butterfly Garden
Research which flowers attract butterflies to your backyard and create a garden. This science lesson teaches about plants and insects, plus you’ll enjoy a beautiful display.
Start an Insect Journal
Teaching kids to recognize and identify the insects around them is very useful. My daughter is scared of every bug she sees so by being educated on which insects can cause harm and which are harmless is helpful. Let your kids make their journal where they draw what the insect looks like, write down facts and list where they spotted them.
Hunt for Fossils
We love rock painting as a family. It is one of our favorite summer camp crafts. While exploring for rocks to paint, search for fossils and learn how to identify them and how they became fossilized.
Help a Neighbor
We love giving back to our community. It is a very important lesson to teach your kids. Depending on their age, see how they can help a neighbor. Whether it is picking up their mail and newspaper or mowing their lawn, offer a helping hand to those next door.
What is your family’s favorite educational activity?
