Are you familiar with the National 4-H Council? Living in Texas, we have had several family members participate in the local 4-H program through their schools. My niece was involved for years and our whole family showed up at events in support. We saw firsthand the important lessons she learned and how much she benefitted from the program. The National 4-H Council teaches leadership and lessons centered on the 4 H’s – head, heart, hands, and health. From community service to growing a vegetable garden, the skills learned are limitless.
“I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world.”
The new 4-H Wellness 360º program, supported by Target, leverages the proven influence of young people by engaging teens to lead and empower their peers and families to establish life-long healthy habits. It is amazing that not only are they teaching leadership skills but they are equipping teens to take on the leadership role today, not just in the future. Through encouragement, they learn to encourage others.
This summer our family spent a lot of time focusing on establishing new health goals. We dug deeper into a hobby we all enjoyed, kayaking. To create new experiences each time we went kayaking, we visited different lakes and large ponds within the Dallas Fort Worth area. Beyond focusing on our health goals by participating in the sport of kayaking, we also practiced new fishing skills and taught the boys how to cook a fish dinner.
The 4-H Wellness 360º program offers a wide range of lessons from nutrition education and cooking classes, to yoga and lessons on avoiding risky behaviors. They provide the framework to make sure today’s youth have the knowledge and confidence to not only live a healthy life themselves but to also help share their knowledge with their peers and families. By taking the “Teens as Teachers” approach they not only empower them but they build the confidence they need to stand up for the right decisions in the future.
