Every year as my kids get older, I feel more and more excited to watch them turn into fully realized people. With funny personalities, great insights, and kind hearts, it’s a blessing to see them grow up (even in those moments we wish they’d stay small!).
Selfishly, something I’m also excited for as they get older is getting to teach them the things I wish I knew when I was their age.
Here are four essential life lessons I can’t wait to teach my kids:
1. Not Everyone Has to Follow the Same Path
I can’t wait to tell my kids that it’s okay if what they do is a little different from what’s typical! As long as they work hard doing something they love, it will all work out.
It’s important to remind our children that no two people have the same path to success. Everyone’s journey is unique and they should embrace every moment. Hopefully, my kids will learn they get to define their own successes!
So, if they aren’t good at playing football, we’ll try basketball instead! Or, if my kid decides college is not for them, we’ll focus on creating a business or getting a nontraditional degree or even filing for a contractors license Idaho! The possibilities are endless and I’m excited to help my children figure it all out.
2. You Won’t Be Good at Everything on Your First Try
As one of my kid’s favorite shows, Adventure Time says, “Sucking at something is the first step towards being sorta good at something,” and it is so true.
I’m so excited to let my kids try new activities (without pressure), to help them build their skills with confidence, instead of making them think they should be good at something on their first try. It’s important to teach kids to embrace their mistakes so that they stay resilient as they build their skills.
3. It’s Okay to Ask for Help
Next up, I’m going to try and let my kids know that it’s normal to ask for help. As kids get older, it seems like this one is harder and harder for them to remember as they try to carve out some independence.
So, it’s helpful to rely a lot on a community for this lesson. Make sure your child has teachers and family members who they can turn to, so when they make a mistake, they know they have many people who can lend a helping hand without any fear of upsetting someone.
4. Building A Strong Community Is One of the Best Things You Can Do
Lastly, I want kids to know that having a chosen family is one of the world’s best things. Whether it’s made of coworkers, school friends, or even cousins, you can do practically anything if you build a strong community. Life is not only about money and material happiness. I want to teach my kids that they should value relationships with the people who truly matter.

I’m so excited to teach my kids everything I possibly can – from embracing education and their career to asking for help whenever necessary. I’m sure they’re going to teach me so much as they continue to grow!
